Accessibility in Larvik & Stavern
Last updated:Are you planning a trip to Larvik or Stavern and need information about accessibility?
Accessibility consultant Adele Heidenreich has surveyed several locations in Vestfold to make it easier to plan your visit if you have any form of reduced mobility.
Fredriksvern Verft
Fredriksvern Verft, the former naval yard in Stavern, is one of the town’s most important historic sites, with old buildings, open spaces and clear traces of its military past. The area has an atmospheric feel, with a short distance down towards the water and lovely views along the way.

Public parking at the entrance to the area is limited. The route first crosses a short section of cobblestones with some uneven patches, before continuing onto firm ground with a very thin layer of gravel and then asphalt.
The route through the flat area and towards the water is just under 600 metres one way

Less than half a kilometre away is the Hall of Remembrence, the national memorial to Norwegian merchant seafarers who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars. From the main car park, it is about 280 metres to the memorial area. With an accessible parking permit, it is possible to drive farther in, reducing the distance to around 100 metres to the monument.

The final section towards the building has a very steep but short slope. The staircase has 25 steps, while the lift is somewhat hidden behind the stairs. At the top, visitors can sit on the granite ledges around the building and enjoy the sweeping view over Stavern and the coastal landscape.
Nerdrum Museum
Nerdrum Museum offers a powerful encounter with Odd Nerdrum, one of Norway’s most talked-about contemporary artists, in a building where the dark, subdued atmosphere complements the art.

Parking is a short distance from the entrance within the Sjøparken area. The museum has a step-free entrance and is spread across two levels, with a lift or 23 steps between the floors. A full route through the museum is about 600 metres, with seating available in almost every room.

A visit can be combined with Havfuglen Café, located just outside the museum. The main entrance has two steps, while the side entrance by the outdoor tables has a small ramp. The café has a roomy toilet with good manoeuvring space, but no support rails.
Quality Hotel Grand Larvik
Quality Hotel Grand Larvik is a good base for the southern part of Vestfold. The hotel has covered parking at the back, with step-free access through a door with an automatic opener. From there, it is about 75 metres to reception. The reception, restaurant and lift are all located on the main level.

The hotel has accessible rooms and an accessible toilet, and the restaurant is bright and spacious, with the buffet close to most tables
This trip was carried out by car and on crutches, to see how the experiences work in practice and to make it easier to plan visits from home based on individual needs. This applies whether visitors use a wheelchair or other mobility aids, are older, or have other forms of reduced mobility. Clear information makes it easier to plan and experience Vestfold with greater predictability and confidence.
