Munch’s house

Munch’s house is located close to Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand. You walk past the hotel and the marina. Surrounded by green lawns, you’ll see the house and studio up on the hill. Alternatively, you can walk along Edvard Munchs gate, an idyllic street with southern charm and cosy gardens. At the museum, it’s nice to sit and look out over the sea and down to the shoreline that captured Munch’s interest early on.

The life of Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch painted many of his masterpieces here, such as Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand, Girls on the Bridge and The Dance of Life. The famous painter lived from 1863 to 1944. From 1889, he travelled to Åsgårdstrand several summers. Munch lived a carefree summer life here and was well liked by the locals. In the museum, everything is preserved as it was when Munch lived here. He bought the house in 1898 and owned it until his death. The original studio building has been demolished, but another has been erected on the same site.

Munch’s House is open from May to September. Times vary according to the season. The ticket price includes entrance and a guided tour of the house. Guided tours for groups are also available outside opening hours. See updated opening hours and prices.

Parking spaces can be found in the marina at Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand.

Warhol and Munch in Tønsberg

In the heart of Tønsberg is the art museum Haugar Art Museum. A separate exhibition about pop artist Andy Warhol and Edvard Munch is located at the museum. Warhol made a series of paintings and drawings of Munch’s work.
