Åsgårdstrand
Last updated:Åsgårdstrand has a small-town idyll with small galleries, cafés and is an attractive place for tourists in the summer.
City of artists
For more than 100 years, the town has been visited by famous painters, making Åsgårdstrand known as a town of artists. Edvard Munch painted many of his masterpieces here and he spent many summers in Åsgårdstrand. Boat holidaymakers come back year after year, and for good reason – this is where you get a real Vestfold summer.

Munch’s house
Munch’s house is located close to Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand. Surrounded by green lawns, you can see the house and the studio up the hill. Alternatively, you can walk along Edvard Munchs gate, an idyllic street with southern charm and cosy gardens. At the museum, it’s nice to sit and look out over the sea and down to the shoreline that captured Munch’s interest early on. Munch lived a carefree summer life here and was well liked by the locals. In the museum, everything is preserved as it was when Munch lived here. He bought the house in 1898 and owned it until his death. The original studio building has been demolished, but another has been erected on the same site.
Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand
If you’re tempted by a breakfast where you can also experience a spectacular sunrise or a dinner with a panoramic view of the Oslofjord, head to Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand. Right next to the marina, you can keep an eye on boating and enjoy quiet days in the hotel’s fantastic location during the summer, or sit in the front row and experience the fjord when the winter storms rage.
Boating and swimming
Åsgårdstrand has its own water park in the centre of town with a beautiful sandy beach, large grassy area and volleyball court. You’ll also find a swimming ladder and diving board on the pier. Just above the beach you’ll find Grand Hotel Åsgårdstrand and restaurants. Next to the beach is Åsgårdstrand guest harbour, which is open all year round and has space for 30 boats.
