    The Viking Ship Saga Oseberg

Discover Saga Oseberg in Tønsberg, a sailing reconstruction of the famous Oseberg Viking ship.

At the waterfront in Tønsberg, you can discover Saga Oseberg, an archaeological reconstruction of the famous Oseberg Viking ship. Built using traditional Viking Age tools and shipbuilding techniques, the vessel offers a fascinating insight into the craftsmanship and maritime knowledge of the Vikings. When Saga Oseberg is moored at Vikingodden, you can admire its distinctive carved prow, wooden hull and remarkable craftsmanship up close.

A Viking ship built using traditional techniques
Saga Oseberg was built through an extensive reconstruction project carried out by the Oseberg Viking Heritage Foundation. Craftspeople and volunteers used traditional tools and working methods based on archaeological knowledge of Viking Age shipbuilding. The aim was to understand how the original Oseberg ship was constructed and how such a vessel performs at sea. Saga Oseberg is a working, sailing Viking ship rather than a static museum replica. It demonstrates how archaeological discoveries can bring ancient craftsmanship and seafaring skills back to life.

The story behind the Oseberg ship
The original Oseberg ship was discovered in 1904 during the excavation of a large burial mound in Slagendalen, near Tønsberg. The ship was used as a burial vessel for two women who were laid to rest in AD 834. Their grave contained an extraordinary collection of objects, including a decorated wagon, sledges and intricately carved animal-head posts. The Oseberg discovery is especially famous for its elaborate wood carvings and the insights it offers into Viking Age art, craftsmanship and burial traditions. To explore the original discovery site, visit the Oseberg Mound in Slagendalen.

Experience Saga Oseberg on the water
Saga Oseberg is also used for organised voyages and rowing activities. On selected trips, you can join the crew and learn to row a Viking ship under the guidance of an experienced captain. Before departure, participants receive safety instructions and an introduction to rowing commands. It is a memorable way to experience Tønsberg and Vestfjorden while learning about Viking shipbuilding and maritime traditions. Visit Row Viking Ship for information about trip duration, participant requirements and booking.
