    Andebu Church

Andebu Church is a 12th-century stone church with beautifully carved historic furnishings.

Andebu Church in Sandefjord municipality is a Romanesque stone church dating from the 12th century. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St Nicholas, the church has served its local community for more than 800 years. Its medieval architecture, carved Renaissance furnishings and historic religious artwork make it an interesting part of Vestfold's cultural heritage.

A medieval church with centuries of history
Andebu Church was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque stone church. Its rectangular nave and smaller, narrower chancel reflect the architectural traditions of the period. The porch and sacristy were added later. Following the Reformation, the church fell into disrepair. Extensive restoration work took place during the 17th century, including the installation of larger windows and a roof turret. The turret was destroyed during a severe storm and replaced in 1701. Today, Andebu Church remains an active parish church, used for worship and religious ceremonies.

    Historic carvings and religious artwork
The interior contains several important works of art and craftsmanship. Both the pulpit and altarpiece date from around 1650 and feature biblical scenes and carved decoration associated with the regional Jarlsberg Renaissance style. The altarpiece includes a depiction of the Crucifixion. The Gothic-style baptismal font, carved from soapstone, survives from the Middle Ages and is one of the church's oldest furnishings. Another remarkable artwork is a Last Supper painting dating from 1569, associated with the Dutch painter Pieter Aertsen. The painting has significant art-historical value and has undergone conservation work by the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research. The church also has an organ built in the Netherlands in 2008.
